How to convert text to a handwriting PDF

By Ayush NautiyalUpdated

An image is fine for dropping one page into a chat. Everything else wants a PDF: printing, submitting to a portal, emailing something that will open the same way on the other end, keeping twelve pages in one file instead of twelve.

This covers going from typed text to a finished handwritten PDF with TextToHandAI, and the print settings that make the difference between a page that looks written and a page that looks reproduced.

PDF or images

Use PDF when:

  • there is more than one page, and you want one file
  • it is going to a printer
  • it is going to an upload portal, which almost always accepts PDF and often accepts nothing else
  • it has to look identical on a device you do not control

Use PNG or JPEG when the page is going into a chat app, a slide, a document, or a notes app like GoodNotes. More on that workflow in the GoodNotes and iPad guide.

A detail that matters more than it sounds: the PDF export sizes pages in real millimetres. An A4 export is a genuine 210 × 297 mm page, not an image scaled to approximately A4. Plenty of handwriting tools get this wrong, and you find out when the ruled lines come out at 94% and the margins are off.

Step by step

  1. Open the converter and paste your text. The preview paginates live, so the page count is accurate from the start.

  2. Set the page size first. A4 for most of the world, US Letter for North America, plus A3, A5, A6, Legal and Tabloid. Changing this re-flows everything, so choosing it after you have tuned the layout means doing the layout twice.

  3. Style the page. Handwriting style, paper, ink, size, spacing, realism. All of it is in how to use TextToHandAI.

  4. Fix the pagination. Look at the last line of each page. If one page ends with a single orphaned word, pull the margin in by four or six px, or drop the handwriting size by one. Either usually pulls it back.

  5. Choose a finish. Clean for printing. Scanned if the PDF is being uploaded somewhere and should look like a digitised document rather than a generated one.

  6. Click PDF. Every page goes into one file and downloads. Nothing is watermarked and there is no gate in front of the button.

Getting a clean print

This is where most of the avoidable problems are.

Match the export size to the paper in the tray. Exporting Letter and printing on A4 means the printer scales it, and scaled handwriting looks subtly wrong. Stroke weights thin out, the ruling spacing stops matching anything real.

Print at 100%, not “fit to page”. Most print dialogs call this “Actual size”. “Fit to page” will shrink the content by a few percent to accommodate the printer’s unprintable margin, which undoes the point of exporting at a real paper size.

Turn off any “enhance” or “sharpen” option. Printer drivers sometimes try to improve scanned-looking documents. Handwriting rendered at 2.5× does not need help, and sharpening makes the letter edges crunchy.

Run one page before you run thirty. Ink density varies a lot between printers. Pencil grey in particular comes out lighter on paper than it looks on screen, often much lighter. Black and blue are safe.

Legal pad yellow needs a colour printer. On a mono printer it comes out as a grey wash over the whole page, which looks worse than plain would have.

Multi-page documents

There is no page limit. Long text flows onto as many pages as it needs and the PDF contains all of them in order.

If you need images instead, because a portal only accepts JPEG, a multi-page export comes back as a ZIP with files named texttohandai-page-01.jpg, page-02 and so on. The zero-padding is there so they sort correctly, which saves you from the classic page-1, page-10, page-11, page-2 problem.

File size

PDF pages are rendered images rather than vector text, so a handwritten PDF is larger than a typed one. Expect roughly 300 KB to 1 MB per page depending on how much is on it and which paper style you picked. Parchment and Kraft are the heaviest because the texture does not compress well.

If a portal has a size cap, the ways down are: fewer pages, a plain paper style, or exporting JPEG at a smaller page size instead.

Because the PDF holds images, the text inside it is not selectable or searchable. That is correct for something meant to look handwritten, but worth knowing if you expected to be able to search it later.

Does the file leave your computer

No. Pages are laid out, drawn and assembled into a PDF entirely in the browser, and the file goes from the tab to your downloads folder. There is no server in the path because there is no server. Details in the privacy policy.
